GEICO 500 at Talladega Superspeedway
Qualifying Results
- Kevin Harvick and the No. 4 Budweiser Chevrolet SS team will start Sunday’s GEICO 500 from the 39th position following Saturday's qualifying session at Talladega Superspeedway.
- Qualifying was broken up into three rounds, and the field was split into two groups for the first round. Harvick was in the second group, and as he pulled off of pit road to go out for his run, no other drivers went with him as planned, so he was left without any drafting partners for his run. As a result, his qualifying time of 51.110 seconds and speed of 187.361 mph put him 45th fastest on the leaderboard. Per NASCAR rules, the top-36 positions are determined by speed, car owner points set spots 37-42 and the 43rd position goes to a past champion (if eligible). With that, the No. 4 Budweiser team will start 39th.
- Brian Vickers scored the pole award with a fast lap time of 48.825 seconds and a speed of 196.129 mph. Jimmie Johnson, A.J. Allmendinger, Ryan Blaney and Brad Keselowski complete the top-five spots.
- Teams had two practice sessions on Friday to prepare for qualifying and Sunday’s race. The No. 4 Budweiser team completed a total of 36 laps in the first session and Harvick was satisfied with the car’s performance. The team elected to not participate in the final practice session.
Harvick on qualifying at Talladega Superspeedway:
“I think the qualifying round really just doesn’t work on superspeedways for whatever reason. (The car) is fine. They all run really good. It will be fun.”
The following is the starting position of the other SHR teams in Sunday's race:
- Kurt Busch and the No. 41 Haas Automation Chevrolet team will start 18th.
- Danica Patrick and the No. 10 GoDaddy Breast Cancer Awareness Chevrolet team will start 28th.
- Tony Stewart and the No. 14 Bass Pro Shops/Mobil 1 Chevrolet team will start 37th.
