• Harvick completed one run in each of the three rounds of qualifying. He was scored sixth fastest in the first round and posted a new track record lap time of 27.741 seconds and a speed of 194.658 mph in the second session to end up first. In the final round, he once again posted the fastest lap time and earned the pole award.
• The effort marks Harvick’s second pole award of the season and the eighth of his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series career. Joey Logano, Brad Keselowski, Carl Edwards and Kyle Larson complete the top-five starting positions.
• Teams had two practice sessions on Friday to prepare for Saturday night’s race. Harvick and the No. 4 team focused on the car’s handling in race trim during the first session and ended up seventh on the speed chart. During final practice, the team concentrated on qualifying-trim and Harvick posted the fifth-fastest lap of the session on his second mock-qualifying run.
Harvick on qualifying at Kansas Speedway:
“I just have to thank everybody on my Jimmy John’s Chevrolet team for all that they do. It was ‘Freaky Fast’ today so now we just have to put it all together tomorrow night when it counts. The pole is great. These guys have done a great job for qualifying. It makes life a lot easier when you can have the first pit stall. Hopefully we can have a good night tomorrow, but the weekend has gone good so far. We had a great test here a few weeks ago and everything has carried right over.”
The following is the starting position of the other SHR teams in Saturday's race:
• Kurt Busch and the No. 41 Haas Automation Chevrolet team will start sixth.
• Tony Stewart and the No. 14 Bass Pro Shops/Mobile 1 Chevrolet team will start eighth.
• Danica Patrick and the No. 10 GoDaddy Chevrolet team will start ninth.
