Coke Zero 400
Powered by Coca-Cola – July 5, 2008
Daytona International Speedway – Daytona Beach, Fla
NOTES:
This Week’s No. 29 Reese’s Chevrolet at
Daytona International Speedway … Kevin Harvick will pilot Chassis No. 219
from the Richard Childress Racing NASCAR Sprint Cup Series stable. Built new
in 2008, this is the same Chevrolet Impala SS Harvick raced to a 14th place
finish in the 50th running of the Daytona 500 in February and to a 24th place
finish at Talladega Superspeedway.
Stat Facts … In 14 NASCAR Sprint Cup
Series starts at Daytona International Speedway, Harvick has posted one win
(2007 Daytona 500), one pole, three top-five and five top-10 finishes.
Additionally, Harvick has led 88 laps of competition and has completed 97.1 %
of all laps contested.
The Fast Way Around … Harvick captured
his only Daytona pole at the 2002 Pepsi 400. He posted a fast lap of 48.638
seconds (185.041 mph).
Points Check … Harvick jumped to 12th in
the NSCS points standings with his 14th-place finish last weekend at New
Hampshire Motor Speedway. Harvick trails 11th-place and RCR teammate Clint
Bowyer by five points, 15 points behind 10th-place Kasey Kahne, 26 makers
behind Tony Stewart in ninth and 204 points out of the top five.
Clean Change Challenge … On Thursday,
July 3, Harvick will officially wave the green flag on the Pennzoil Clean
Change Challenge, a nationwide campaign to raise awareness about the need to
properly dispose of used motor oil. Harvick will join Pennzoil and Wal-Mart’s
finest team members in an attempt to collect 200 gallons of used motor oil in
just two hours. The two-hour event, which will kick off at 10 a.m. at the
Wal-Mart located at 1101 Beville Rd, in Daytona Beach, Fla., is designed to
help ensure that used motor oil is properly recycled and that Florida’s
drinking water stays clean. In honor of Harvick’s commitment, and to help
motivate the local residents to participate Pennzoil is proud to donate $29
to the Central Florida Boy Scouts Council for each gallon of used oil
collected.
Change Of Scenery … Reese’s, a major
associate sponsor of RCR’s No. 29 Chevrolet Impala SS, kicks into high gear
this weekend in Daytona as Harvick and the No. 29 team transform their bright
yellow-and-red Shell-Pennzoil Chevrolet into a bright orange Reese’s racing
machine for the Coke Zero 400. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are peanut
butter-filled chocolate cups. They were created in 1928 by H.B. Reese, a
former dairy farmer and foreman for Milton S. Hershey. The H.B. Reese Candy
Co., established in the basement of Reese’s house in Hershey, Pa., went on to
merge with The Hershey Company in 1963 due to the popularity of Reese’s
Peanut Butter Cups. Today, Reese’s has become the No. 1 selling candy bar in
the United States and the Reese’s brand is the most successful brand owned by
The Hershey Company.
Still Running Strong … Harvick has not
recorded a DNF (did not finish) in 61 consecutive races, which is the new
modern era record (1972-present). Bowyer currently has the second-longest
active streak of 54 consecutive races without a DNF.
RCR Rocks Daytona … Dating back to 1986,
RCR owns 23 total victories at DIS, including Dale Earnhardt’s emotional win
in 1998, kicking off NASCAR’s 50th anniversary, and Harvick’s dramatic win in
the 2007 season-opening Daytona 500. Additionally, RCR won 10 straight
(1990-1999) qualifying races with Dale Earnhardt. All told, RCR has won five
Bud Shootouts, 13 qualifying races, two Coke Zero 400s and two Daytona 500s.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. also won the February 2002 NASCAR Nationwide Series race
at Daytona driving a car fielded by RCR and Harvick won the 2007 Nationwide
Series opener at DIS in the No. 21 Chevrolet. In 104 points-paying Sprint Cup
Series races at the historic 2.5-mile Daytona Beach race course, RCR has four
wins, 10 poles, 25 top-five and 45 top-10 finishes. RCR-prepared race cars
have also led 1,440 laps and earned just over $16 million in purse money.
Richard Childress, a former driver in NASCAR’s premier division earned two of
those top 10s between February 1976 and July 1980.

KEVIN HARVICK QUOTES:
Was winning the Daytona 500 one of the most
rewarding wins in your career?
“I think winning the Daytona 500 was the biggest moment in my career so
far. Just to win the Daytona 500 last year was something I don’t think I
realized the magnitude of. We’ve been fortunate to win a few of the big races
– I always thought winning the Brickyard was a bigger deal. I was wrong.
Everywhere you go, that’s all anybody wants to talk about – winning the
Daytona 500. This one race can carry you for a long time.”
What is different at Daytona during the July races
compared to the races in February?
“The track gets hot and slick during the races in July. The handling
characteristics become magnified a lot more. We are shooting for a
good-handling race car. We are willing to knock a little speed out of the car
for it to handle better.”
Is restrictor plate racing more mental than
physical?
“I have always liked the bigger tracks. For me, it’s way more mental than
physical. You’re worn out by the end of the race. You spend a lot of time
looking in the mirrors anticipating the other guy’s next move.” |
